01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Piled atop medium-thick, curly noodles on a shallow dish come crisp cucumbers, bean sprouts, corn, and a substantial ladle of dark meat miso. Kumakō's signature zhajiangmian in Nihonbashi-Bakurochō centers on chewy, firm noodles vigorously mixed with a rich, sweet-savory miso sauce accented with a spicy kick. The juicy, fresh vegetables balance the concentrated sauce, keeping chopsticks moving through what is an ample standard serving.

The zhajiangmian menu features multiple variations, allowing diners to customize their bowl with wontons, sliced chashu pork, tofu, or wakame seaweed. In the colder months, the kitchen thoughtfully serves both the noodles and bean sprouts warm. Beyond its star dish, this noodle shop offers a broad selection including warm shoyu and miso ramen, tanmen, sanmamen, and assorted chilled noodles that hit the spot during the warmer months.

For a heartier midday meal, the half-curry set makes a dependable choice. The accompanying curry is an old-school recipe packed with chunky ingredients, carrying a spicy warmth that keeps the appetite going. Once the noodles and curry are finished, a complementary, lightly sweetened coffee jelly is served to clean the palate after the bold, spicy flavors.

Seating is counter-only, making it convenient for solo drop-ins. Operating hours center on weekday lunches from 11:00 to 14:30. Cash is the only accepted payment method, and advance reservations are not taken. Takeout zhajiangmian is also available, prepared for orders of two portions or more.
